[SPLATOON] Is The Next Splatfest Going To Be A Gang War? Bloods -VS- Crips?

Splatoon was developed by Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis & Development division, and originated from having a competitive multiplayer ink-based territory control game, which was later expanded to include squids and the ability to swim through the ink. The concept was created by lead programmer Shintaro Sato, who had previously worked on titles in the Animal Crossing franchise. The development team for Splatoon was generally composed of younger Nintendo employees (compared to other titles by the company). The main appeal of the game is its online competitive 3rd person shooter matchups where two teams pick a side and battle it out in these huge special Turf War events hosted under the name “Splatfest”.

The death of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls 1996 – 1997, are the focal points of the feud between Los Angeles turf based label, Death Row Records, and New York turf based label, Bad Boy Records. It has virtues significant here, because it’s probably the most widely entertained and profitable rivalry in recent entertainment industry history. All thanks to the emergence of the West Coast, and revival of the East.

A rivalry that penetrated the public mainstream through pure entertainment becoming a cultural movement

In 1996, Tupac Shakur (West Coast, Blood, Affiliate: Thug Life) was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada. Implicated in his death were rappers including The Notorious Biggie Smalls (East Coast Drug Dealer Crip). Six months after Tupac’s death, on March 9, 1997, The Notorious B.I.G. was killed in a drive-by shooting by an “unknown assailant” in Los Angeles, California.

Nope, Not Just You!

These pics are from the Octoling expansion recently announced and features a subtle cultural reference   one of which a person might NEVER expect from Nintendo whom having arguably revealed Splatoon’s new Pearl and Marina as… Biggie and Tupac?!

Looking even closer above, if the date of reveal isn’t clue enough, Tupac and the iconic bandana (which he has worn white also) is seen upon the iconic All Eyez on Me cover and is simultaneously clearly seen worn by the new Octoling with same positioning. Marina even looks like she is doing a Westside hand sign (and even her posture leaning forward just as Tupac from that same cover involving the signal leans seated on the chair). The crown of Pearl is very similar having even the same tilt in its positioning as The Notorious BIG’s lift.
